This research paper, written to examine and apply rhetorical theory and principles, demonstrates my familiarity and facility with these concepts and terminology. Through research and analysis, I examine the importance of a speech’s beginning (or any form of communication). As Cicero says, “bringing the mind of the hearer into a suitable state to receive the rest of the speech” is important, regardless of the time or audience. Today’s writers, content creators, website developers, and more can use this principle to create impactful work.

My Writing on the Web class used Erika Hall’s book, Conversational Design, to study how human-centered design allows technology to do so much more. Consistent with Hall’s ideas, this paper highlights my interest in the roles art and science play in web design.
